What is a zine?
The first zine dates back to 1930 in Chicago- “The Comet.” This first ever zine was inspired by the creators' love of sci-fi. It was completely DIY, including fan discussions, artwork, and prose. Ray Bradbury even started his own zine in 1939 called “Futuria Fantasia.” Bradbury’s zine was a collection of short sci-fi stories, articles, and fan comments. Since the 1930s, zines have been evolving in all different communities- including folk musicians, comic artists, punk & grunge scenes, feminists, and queer communities. Zines have come to represent super-local, creative, and passionate communities that wish to publish content outside of the mainstream. And that representation can come in many forms- poetry, interviews, local events coverage, artwork, and so much more. The best part about a zine is that you get to choose!
Kent Public Library’s zine will be published as a physical booklet as well as online. It will feature content created by and edited by teens.
Pizza and snacks will be provided.
